I believe in “domestic Church” where the
parents are the first teachers for their children; however, I feel
that these values should not be strictly from all Catholic teachings, but set
rather a broad foundation. My parents have raised me with personal values of
how to treat other people and how to be a good person, but these values are not
necessarily religious teachings. As a parent you are a guide for your child and
you are giving them the tools to make their own choices in life and serve the
larger community; thus a practicing a “domestic Church” is important in raising
a respectful child. It is important for
me to have a form of a “domestic Church” in my home. In modern society, some of
the changing family structures in “parenthood” and couples that are not married
having child, parents that are divorced, or a baby being adopted in a family. Not
having both parents to instill these values may hurt the child’s growth. A
positive of these changing compositions is exposed to different structures and
possibly values from other people besides his or her parents. Upon reading the
article regard marriage and a college degree, I was surprised at the results.
To me it indicates the growing of the times and the forever changing society
that adapts (It is unfortunate that in these times a lesser education has
higher rates of cohabitation due to lack of income and other factors.) These family set-ups are becoming more common,
but I feel that this rift in families needs to be addressed.
